The Hyundai Sonata enters the 2021 model year as one of the top-flight entries in the midsize sedan market-with its attractive styling, a plethora of features, and a robust warranty.

The 2021 Sonata is available in the following trim levels:

  • SE
  • SEL
  • SEL
  • Plus
  • Limited

Interior

Two rows of premium cloth-trimmed seats on the 2021 Sonata seat up to five people. You'd need to upgrade to the SEL to get eight-way power on the driver's seat, as well as heating on both front seats. The SEL Plus gains leatherette-and-suede seat trim and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Seating and driving accommodations peak on the top-level Limited, which has leather seat trim, front-seat ventilation, steering-wheel heating, driver-seat memory, and six-way power on the front passenger seat.

Exterior

Fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels and tires, the 2021 Hyundai Sonata is sleekly designed. Joining the alloy wheels are a trapezoidal front grille and side rocker panels with chrome molding to exude a sporty aura. Both the headlights and taillights use LEDs for ultra-bright and long-lasting illumination. At the SEL trim level, the Sonata gains racing-style bumpers, a twin-tip single exhaust system, a gloss-black finish on the front grille, and larger, 17-inch alloy wheels for an enhanced sporty appearance. Additional options include 19-inch wheels, LED turn signals, and a panoramic sunroof.

Technology

With an eight-inch touchscreen, the 2021 Sonata integrates six speakers, an HD Radio transceiver, Bluetooth® streaming audio and hands-free phone operation, a USB port for playing media from or charging your mobile device, and Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration. Remote keyless entry enables access to the cabin via a key fob, rather than an ignition key.

At the SEL trim level, Hyundai upgrades the remote keyless entry system to proximity keyless entry for simply having the key fob on you to unlock the doors. This system is accompanied by a push button for starting the engine without an ignition key. Other improvements include dual-zone automatic climate control, a trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio, and three years of Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system for several remote and security services.

At the SEL Plus level, Hyundai introduces wireless device charging, auto-dimming ability for the rearview mirror to dim headlight glare, and a universal transceiver for remote-controlling garage doors. In addition, there’s the Hyundai Digital Key for remotely controlling the vehicle with Bluetooth® technology.

Infotainment on the Sonata peaks at the Limited trim level. The interface is transformed with a 10.25-inch touchscreen navigation system, and the six-speaker setup is supplanted by a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system.

Performance

The base engine on the 2021 Sonata is a 191-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. For the turbocharged 180-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, go with either the SEL Plus or the Limited, which also include paddle shifters that accompany the smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission for convenience of operating said transmission. Because it has the smallest wheels, the SE model is the most fuel efficient of the four trim levels, which the EPA estimates at 28 MPG in the city and 38 MPG on the highway.

Safety

Driver assistance on the Hyundai Sonata is substantial—with the presence of automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane following assist, driver attention warning, and a rearview camera with rear parking sensors. Seven airbags are also present for deployment if there’s a crash. The SEL and SEL Plus gain blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit warning.

Driver assistance peaks at the Limited trim level, which gains a color heads-up display, remote smart parking assist for remote parking of the vehicle, highway drive assist, parking collision-avoidance assist, and a blind-spot view monitor. In addition, Hyundai adds front parking sensors, which join the rear parking one of the camera system, which is upgraded to provide a 360-degree viewing perspective.
